Download Full Blackmail: How a Married Man's Affair Leads to Trouble

Journal of the History of Sexuality 12.3 (2003) 500-501 // --> [Access article in PDF] Sexual Blackmail: A Modern History. By Angus McLaren. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2002. Pp. x + 332. $35.00 (cloth). In 1937 the blackmail trials of a New York City abortion ring involving over two hundred physicians and pharmacists caused a sensational scandal. The front pages of the New York press revealed that one rogue doctor collected "fabulous sums" extorting money from colleagues by threatening to reveal their illegal practice. Adding to the outrage, judges and public officials had received tens of thousands of dollars in hush money to protect the abortionists. Ultimately, the state indicted a number of doctors and thirty-seven public officials, including the judge who had quashed earlier indictments brought against the abortionists.

This is only one of the many fascinating blackmail stories Angus McLaren tells in Sexual Blackmail: A Modern History. Tracing the two-century rise and decline of sexual blackmail in England and the United States, McLaren, who has written lively, informative accounts of contraception, eugenics, masculinity, and serial killings, examines the blackmail stories told in courts and their depictions in the popular culture to cast new light on the history of abortion, prostitution, sexual assault, adultery, and homosexuality.

While similarities existed in English and American blackmail stories, because of the 1885 Labouchère Amendment to the Criminal Law, which criminalized a wide variety of acts as "indecency between males," the English courts and press were most concerned with homosexual blackmail cases. In addition, the English desire to maintain class distinctions fixed the court's attention on lower-class hooligans threatening the propertied, professional classes.

The laws of the United States evoked a different set of concerns. American blackmail stories concentrated on a newly mobile society's challenges to older Victorian sexual values, especially as women entered the public realm. The 1910 Mann Act, which made it a federal offense to travel across state lines for the purpose of having sex with a woman other than a wife, focused the narrative of blackmail on the prostitutes and bully boys who threatened heterosexual males with public exposure. The Mann Act revealed another American taboo: interracial sex. One of its most famous victims was African American heavyweight champion Jack Johnson, who was sent to jail because his white mistress traveled with him.

McLaren understands blackmail cases to be a forum in which contemporary society examined gender, class, and race relations. Even as the courts and the press attempted to uphold the moral and sexual status quo, these cases provided the public with subversive lessons about the kinds of transgressive sexual behavior that were taking place all around them. Cautionary tales of the dangers of men having sex with men or prostitutes, unmarried women getting pregnant and having abortions, and interracial sexual relationships ultimately helped to undermine the very mores they sought to uphold.

"I infected your computer with my private trojan" is a scam email using the 'sextortion' scam model. This message attempts to blackmail recipients with videos of their sexual activity (the videos are nonexistent). The scammers claim that they have obtained this compromising material via malware they have used to infect the user's device.

As well as blatant scam attempts (e.g. blackmail with fake material), these messages are used to trick people into revealing their personal information - emails, social media, social networking, e-commerce (online store), banking and other account log-in credentials. They are also employed to infect systems with malicious programs (e.g. trojans, ransomware and other malware.).

Infections are caused via dangerous files attached to deceptive emails. Alternatively, the messages can contain download links of malicious content. Users are deceived into trusting this mail, as it is often disguised as "official", "important", "urgent", "priority" and so on. Infectious files can be in various formats.

For example, Microsoft Office and PDF documents, archive (RAR, ZIP) and executable (.exe, .run) files, JavaScript, etc. The infection process (i.e. malware download/installation) is triggered when a dangerous file is executed, run or otherwise opened. For example, Microsoft Office documents request users to enable macro commands (to enable editing).

Additionally, use Microsoft Office versions released after 2010. The newer releases have "Protected View" mode, which prevents malicious macros from initiating an infection when the document is opened. Other popular malware proliferation methods include illegal activation tools ("cracks"), fake updates and untrusted download channels.

She describes how emotional blackmail tactics are used by abusers to threaten in order to get what they want. In placing demands and threats, they create feelings of fear, guilt, and anger to solicit compliance from their victims. In doing so, they divert blame and responsibility to the victim for their own negative actions. Typically, this dysfunctional type of manipulation occurs in close relationships.

Emotional blackmail is a concept recently developed and one receiving increased attention. The #MeToo movement is bringing education and awareness around the dynamics of emotional abuse and its powerful negative impact. In this article, we explore the meaning behind emotional blackmail, examples of this manipulation, the damage that occurs from this emotional abuse, and ways to handle it.

FOG is a term named by Forward, suggesting that fear, obligation, and guilt are the dynamics in emotional blackmail between the manipulator and the victim. The acronym FOG also accurately describes the confusion and lack of clarity and thinking that can occur in these interpersonal dynamics. Emotional blackmail can create a fog and contribute to feelings of fear, obligation, guilt, and anxiety.

Common in any abuse cycles, it is important to understand the progression of emotional blackmail. It usually starts as subtle or implicit comments and behaviors. The progression can be insidious, so one does not realize its impact until it has gotten severe.

In some situations, there may seem to be a fine line between indirect communication and manipulation. Emotional blackmail and indirect communication can both have passive aggressive undertones. The communication becomes manipulation and blackmail when it is used consistently to control another individual or coerce them into doing what the requestor demands.

There is also a distinction between setting healthy boundaries and emotional blackmail. In setting boundaries, the individual is asserting themselves and communicating what their needs are. Emotional blackmail involves conveying threats that will result in a punishment of the victim does not meet the request.

Victims of emotional blackmail typically feel insecure, unvalued, and unworthy. They often struggle with low self-esteem and doubt their own needs. Victims can demonstrate the following characteristics:

Forward notes in the book that an important takeaway for the victim is that the behavior of an emotional blackmailer feels like it is about you but for the most part it is not. It often comes from deep insecurities inside of the blackmailer. Fear and anxiety can come out as rage and blame toward the victim. These tendencies often have to do with what has happened in the past rather than the reality of the current situation.

Some of these traits may be close to the surface and observable, such as anger. However, much of the insecurities, emotional pain and fears lie deep within the psychological makeup of the blackmailer.

The scientific research on emotional blackmail, in particular, is limited. In one public health study, researchers explored personality correlates of emotional blackmail in relationships (Mazur et. al).

They utilized the five-factor personality model to assess risk factors for potential victims and individuals at risk for engaging in emotional blackmail. They discovered that neuroticism and agreeableness were risk factors for taking on the role of the victim. The factors protecting against the use of emotional blackmail in close relationships were agreeableness and conscientiousness. 2ff7e9595c
